LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — Traverse City marked a significant milestone today with the groundbreaking of the nearly $29 million Freshwater Research and Innovation Center at Discovery Pier.
The center aims to consolidate education, research, workforce, and business development under one roof, with a focus on marine technology, also known as blue tech.
The project is a collaboration involving over a hundred partners, including Northwestern Michigan College and Discovery Pier, and is expected to inject talent and technology into the marine field.
Kerry Guier from the EGLE Brownfield Redevelopment Office said, "The result, obviously, an amazing development of property that is safe for reuse, the creation of a bunch of jobs, some huge private investments of around $128 million, I think you said. And, ultimately, an amazing impactful project in Elmwood Township that going to inspire and train future scientists."
The nearly 40,000-square-foot facility will feature advanced labs, a business incubator, and pier access for research vessels.
